Medium and Money

For me, it’s a hobby that pays. But everyone’s different!

There’s a lot of discussion about this lately — the subject of money, and how it’s earned (or not) on Medium. Perhaps it’s who I follow, and what shows up on my home page, but every day I see quite a few articles about earnings, curation, and generally how to get more of all of it. And I read them.

I started here less than nine months ago, after finding out about Medium in James Altucher’s Side Hustle Bible. Knowing absolutely nothing else about the platform, I immediately signed up for the Partner Program (because, why not?) and published a story that I had previously posted on Facebook. It took me a while to figure out what it meant, but that very first story got curated.

So I was off to the races. I had a bit of beginner’s luck, due to posting some tried-and-true stuff that I had written previously (that people on Facebook seemed to like). Also, in my third month, I was contacted by Human Parts about publishing one of my stories. Suffice to say, every month since then, I have been one of those in the “top 7%” of earners — largely due to the popularity of that one story.

So, cool.

But again, this is just a side hustle for me. I have a full-time job, and a side business that keeps me very busy. So, the money I make…
