About twenty-five years ago, there was a TV show called Northern Exposure. Like now, I didn’t watch a whole lot of television, but I never missed that program. In it, there was a character named Ed, who was continuously plagued by his insecurities. And whenever his self-esteem started to dip, an imaginary monster would show up to berate him.

You’ll never amount to anything, you idiot.

Don’t even try! You’re going to fail.

Nobody likes you. You have no friends.

Yep, that little green monster was an asshole, and definitely NOT his friend.

And I had my own despicable creature following me around — my own enemy. He would show up quite frequently, sadly.

But I didn’t want this guy around me any more, so I started being mean right back to him. I don’t remember if this was in the show, or if I just made it up, but when this little bastard would show up, I would imagine kicking him right in the face. Take that you little fucker. And he would go scurrying away.

You see, back then I was fraught with self-doubt — personally and professionally. So this concept truly…
